Designing the Strategy that Matters
A participatory strategy process that produced a decision logic leaders could extend — not a document that aged in a drawer.
Impact at a glance
One shared strategic logic across the leadership group
Faster resolution of contested delivery decisions
Measures tied to intent rather than activity
Problem
Strategy existed as a set of statements that different leaders interpreted differently, so delivery decisions kept re-litigating direction.
Approach
We designed a participatory process that put the hard trade-offs in the room early, structured around evidence about customers, capability and constraint. Each session produced a decision, a record of the reasoning, and the language to carry it forward.
System designed
- A strategic narrative and decision architecture: a clear logic for where the organisation competes, what it declines, and how progress is measured — plus the rhythm to revisit it.
Impact
- One shared strategic logic across the leadership group
- Faster resolution of contested delivery decisions
- Measures tied to intent rather than activity
Artefacts
- Strategic narrative and message architecture
- Strategy on a page with decision logic
- Measurement and evaluation framework
